Colin Ley: Hey, Colin Ley, here with LayRoots. Seeing if I have enough internet to do a live video here. I am on the island of Nevis. There is Peak Nevis, the volcano here on the island. It’s covered with clouds today. I am here for an off-shore planning conference. I’m speaking a little later today. And it’s just been a great experience to be gathered here with planners from around the globe, who are discussing all the hot topics.
An Interesting Question
And one of the interesting questions an attorney said that he poses to his clients is, whether they feel that they will be treated fairly in a US courtroom. And for people who have had some experience with that, maybe been inside the court, been before a judge, they don’t feel like they’ll be treated fairly. So, that’s why they choose to have their LLC or their trust formed with the laws of another country.
And Nevis is one of those countries. They have some different set of rules for what happens if you’re going to sue somebody, right? In the US you can just sue anybody for any reason or no reason at all. Attorneys work on contingency fees, so essentially, if they think they can get some money, some assets out of somebody they’re free to just make a case or try to make a case. And it works a little differently in these other countries. I’m trying not to fall into the water here while I talk.
A whole different system and philosophy
But, so essentially they have a whole different system, a whole different court system that to many people is more fair because it eliminates that ability to just make up any sort of claim to try to get a quick settlement or some sort of easy cash where people will just pay to make a lawsuit go away. So, it also doesn’t hurt that it’s nice and sunny here, especially compared to Seattle, see some of the water and nice sunshine today.
